Yet another common mistake that martial arts practitioners make is not having a grading system for all the techniques that they could learn. They are being spoonfed by their martial arts schools that they end up unsure of which self defense move is applicable for them. Learn to filter self defense techniques and make sure that everything you’re learning is effective. This means that the street fighting techniques are effective against different kinds of people – sizes, pain tolerances, backgrounds and skill sets – as well as in different kinds of environments. The next filter should answer the following questions: is it efficient? Quick? Can it be done very, very quickly? And is it economical in motion? The last filter answers this: are the techniques easy to learn and train? And is it easy to maintain?
